Metpack, an Istanbul-based extrusion coating specialist, has unveiled a new sustainable packaging solution developed in collaboration with BASF. The paper- and cardboard-based packaging material, called Ezycompost, is coated with BASF’s home-compostable biopolymer ecovio® 70 PS14H6 and is certified by TÜV Austria with the “OK Compost Home” label.

In addition to being safe for food contact, the new solution stands out for its high-performance barrier properties. FDA-approved ecovio® 70 PS14H6 provides strong protection against liquids, oils, greases, and mineral oils, while withstanding temperatures up to 100°C. Thanks to its compostability under home conditions, packaging waste can fully decompose in home composting systems, preventing the formation of persistent microplastics. In this way, the solution supports both food safety and environmental sustainability simultaneously.

Supporting the global shift toward paper-based packaging, Metpack’s innovative product can be used in various food-contact applications, such as cold/hot beverage cups, frozen food containers, and microwave-safe plates. Suitable for production on standard forming lines, Ezycompost can be applied 40% thinner than polylactic acid (PLA)-based coatings and achieves coating speeds comparable to those of polyethylene (PE). The product processes smoothly without sticking to the cooling roller and stands out for its superior leak-proof performance and print quality. Additionally, it can be applied using mono- or co-extrusion methods without the need for an adhesive.

Sühan Gürer, Vice President of Sales and New Project Development at Metpack, stated the following regarding the new solution: “With Ezycompost, we offer the food industry the same durability as PE-coated paper while also providing the advantage of certified home compostability. This solution is not only processed faster than PLA-based coatings but can also be disposed of at home without requiring industrial composting. This allows packaging manufacturers to differentiate their products with a focus on sustainability without compromising on performance.”

Michael Bernhard Schick, Global Biopolymers Marketing Manager at BASF, shared the following information: “Ezycompost packaging can fully biodegrade in home garden composts after use, in accordance with national regulations. The ecovio® 70 PS14H6 used in the coating is also suitable for industrial composting systems and is compatible with paper recycling systems. Its home compostability has been certified according to the Australian AS 5810 standard, which is the world’s strictest standard. Additionally, the product contains 70–80% bio-based content according to the ASTM D 6866 standard. For brands seeking to further reduce their carbon footprint, we offer a certified BMB (biomass balanced) version produced using 100% waste-based biomass instead of fossil resources. This version offers a 25% lower product carbon footprint compared to standard ecovio®, while maintaining the same performance, processability, and certifications. Furthermore, thanks to its strong migration barrier properties, it ensures that recycled paper can also be safely used in food packaging.”
